I finished reading both books. I love them!
China Rich Girlfriend is the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians, in case you were wondering. I find it just as engaging as its prequel.
I think this series is written in a very clever and heartfelt way. This is the first time I have read a chic lit written by a male and I think Kevin Kwan does a fantastic job creating good story lines with interesting and convincing characters -some of them are really charming. It would be nice if they were real and appeared in my story… :P. It does read a lot like a Sophie Kinsella book, other than the fact that the theme is Asian. Lol. I feel that the content is rich and full of twists, humour, romance, and moral lessons.
It is a breath of fresh air reading an Asian American novel that reflects a contemporary view of Asia. The books that I have read written by authors such as Lisa See, Amy Tan, Wayson Choy, Pearl Buck all have settings that have taken place prior to China’s economic reform.
I have learned a bit more about modern East Asian culture including the extravagant lifestyles of “crazy rich” asians from Singapore, Hong Kong, and China.
I look forward to the movie adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians. I hope they don’t butcher it like what happened to Shopaholic.
